Urgent HIV prevention
HIV PEP: urgent assessment within 72 hours
If a possible HIV exposure happened in the last 72 hours, seek medical assessment now.
When to seek assessment & emergency treatment
PEP is emergency medication considered after a possible HIV exposure and must be started within 72 hours of the exposure. Seek assessment as soon as possible—the earlier treatment begins, the better; a clinician will discuss whether PEP is appropriate for you.
What happens at the visit
The doctor will discuss the exposure, arrange appropriate baseline testing and explain the follow-up plan. Contact the clinic to confirm current medication availability; if it is unavailable, attend an emergency department.
